A daughter’s love knows no bounds. Ali Merante and her boyfriend Philip Wall were set to get married in July 2016. However, Ali’s Dad, Paul, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer six weeks ago. His main worry was not being able to give his little girl away on her wedding day. Ali and Philip worked frantically to make sure that bride and father of the bride shared this special moment together.
With the help of staff at Upstate University Hospital, she brought her wedding to him, planning the entire ceremony and reception at the hospital in three weeks.
Ali Merante and her now-husband, Philip Wall, both 26, said they scurried to make the event happen this Labor Day weekend, canceling the wedding reservations they had in Skaneateles for the following summer. The Rev. Jason Hage of Holy Family Church in Fairmount and the Rev. Ejike Innocent Onyenagubo, the hospital’s chaplain, officiated the Mass.
Ali’s mother, Elizabeth; and brother, Michael, escorted the bride down the hospital chapel aisle to her dad. Ali danced with her father, who was in a wheelchair pushed by the groom, to Ali and her father’s favorite song, “You’re Still the One,” by Orleans.
Paul Merante was released from the hospital Friday with hospice care. The family then watched the wedding video together.
